Welcome to the Adventures of Dear Abbie's Wife

Hello & Welcome to our Diary page.  The purpose of this diary is to record our adventures, folks who stop by, travels and events at the Thorne Ranch.  It was primarily meant for family and friends in the beginning, but we have grown a large number of faithful readers in the past seven years.   Over 90,000 from all over the world have visited us.   We don't intend to offend anyone or to glorify our life here.  It's pretty boring most of the time as you will see!  We are pretty common folks trying to make a living doing what we love, breeding and raising cattle.  Our wish is that someday this Diary will be enjoyed and appreciated by our grandchildren and great grandchildren.  In the mean time we hope you get a few good laughs at our expense. Learn from the mistakes of others.  You can't live long enough to make them all yourself."

December 1-2  The Holiday Season is upon us and this year has flown by like gang busters.  Is it really time for Christmas and the New Year already?  Seems the older we get the faster time passes or else we are so busy that we don't take time to notice the calendars flipping past each month!  Windy today but still up in the 60's so not bad for the first day of December.  I took some baby clothes over for Erica and got to see the little bungle of joy!  McKenzie is a very pretty baby!  I then went to Langley to pick up groceries.  I came home with a whole truck load of goodies.  The company last week took care of our supplies!   The Steve and Dana Shrum's brought a cow by to breed today.  Tiff came to help today but went home early as she caught the head cold bug that has been getting us all!  We had planned on hauling more hay today but decided to have a slow day and recuperate! ha   Come back for more exciting times!  I am still trying to recuperate from working cows Friday afternoon.  Abbie, Tiff and I  ran around 80 head through the chute to put cidars in so we can breed next week and for recips the week after for the transfer of embryos.

This is a picture of our granddaughter Grace Abigail Thorne.  It kind of makes you say ah doesn't it!

December 3-4  Happy Birthday Kyleigh and Dalton Lee!  Monday was catch up around the house.  I trimmed up the mutts and that meant getting the vacuum out, so I hit all the floors.  I also had an eye appointment with Doc Fullerton at 2:00 in Pryor.  He has family is NE so we always seem to have something to relate to besides my eye balls! ha  He had Lasic surgery before I did and he convinced me that it was the real deal!  No changes at this point.  It sure is nice to get up in the morning and not run into doors and walls. ha  I picked up a new flipper exhaust for one of the John Deere tractors got home and Vincent and Nancy were here.  They brought Juna and her Hardy heifer calf so we can set her up to flush.  Kelly and Morgan Henry came out about dark and they picked out a nice heifer for Morgan to show.  We ran her into the barn and tattooed her and gave her her first halter training.  We tied her up for about 15 minutes and Abbie led her to the trailer.  She was done fighting the halter before they left out of the yard.  Those darn halters are amazing.  Of course it helps to have gentle cattle too.  Morgan is going to have her eating out of her hand real quick!   She is a half Angus and half Braunvieh heifer and Morgan can show her at County as a commercial and at Tulsa in the Open Braunvieh and Junior Heifer show.  I have been working on the Family Ancestry again.  You can see MY Home Page for our surnames and family tree.  The branches just keep on growing! ha   Simply amazing where it takes you.

Looks to be a real pretty day here.  I would imagine we will be hauling hay today!  The roofers should come and finish up the sky lights today too.  Right now we have plywood covering them.  Sure doesn't let in much light.  Talking about light see Anna Light to the right.   She is a real nice Purebred heifer that is doing well this fall.

December 5 -6   We have been hauling hay for the past couple of days nonstop!  We even took hay back to our neighbors that we borrowed hay from last year when we were short.  Great neighbors Bill and Chell Propp.  I am sure you are all familiar with the song "Grandma got ran over by a Reindeer?  Well this grandma could have been run over by a John Deere Tractor yesterday.  Thank heavens this grandma was headed back to the pasture "ahead" of Dear Abbie.  I made the trip over to pick up 8 of those little bales and met Abbie at the house!  He never said anything about having any troubles.  We went back to the hay pasture to pick up the other tractor and another load of bales.  It was not until last night that Dear Abbie confessed that he had a wild ride on his trip home.  He said he was headed up the hill at Propp's place when his truck stopped and started going backwards down the hill.  The back tires of the dually were off the ground spinning in the air!  His tractor had came out of park and was rolling off the big low boy trailer backwards with no driver!   Luckily it rolled down the hill and came to a stop before the pond and the creek draw.   I am really surprised that he even told me but guess it was pretty amazing that he didn't have a major wreck!   The good Lord looks out for little kids and Crazy Old Men evidently!   He was looking out for this grandmother too!  He sent me on ahead!  So now I have decided I won't be the obedient wife and follow behind my husband foot step for foot step anymore.  ha   Like I ever did! ha    Who knows what will happen on our next adventure! ha  I just hope we have our Guardian Angels riding along! This picture is of Turk from Tulsa State Fair.  Looks like a fun group huh?

Today, Friday we pulled cidars and gave shots in mist and cloudy chilly weather. Tomorrow we give shots and then start taking heats for breeding the next day!  Check back soon!

December 7-12   ICE STORM!  That about sums it up for what has been happing in Northeast OK and the Thorne Ranch!  Sunday we A I'd cows until 10:30.  It was a rainy and wet mess!  At 4:00 in the AM our power went off from the inch and a half of ice that formed on the trees, power lines and fences!   We are quite well though and so are our animals!  We had to break off ice on all the hot wire fences on Monday to try and keep everyone in!  Tuesday late we finally got a generator combination welder that we got hooked up to the Electric Box.  So we now have steady heat, lights and TV!  We have been keeping it pretty low though so that it will cover the barn too!  So this is the first time I have opted to turn the computer on!  We kept warm with our pot belly stove the first night!  Pretty romantic a wood stove and candles for atmosphere! ha  Today I took Wily in for his hoof check up and happy to report he is healing!  I put him in the barn and gave him special treatment for awhile in the barn.  We decided to keep him on on antibiotics for a little while longer too!  I met Carol for lunch and we had a good visit!  The ice storm has left over a million folks in our surrounding area without electricity!  We have down high line poles along our road to the north!  One fell on our fence and the lines are across our drive to the north!  We have not even seen a PSO truck yet?  So guess it's good we took our lives into our own hands!  That generator runs about $60 a day of fuel but it's worth every penny.  How accustomed we have become to the easy life of push button lights and climate control heat from a furnace!  We run propane but it won't run without electricity! ha  Will have some pictures to show you the next time I find time to get back on the computer!  Until then stay warm friends and keep smiling!  It can always get worse! ha   We could be in our troops shoes and have 130 degree heat to contend with and hostiles!   Never so bad off it couldn't be worse!

December 13-17  I made it to my Ya Ya Sister's Christmas party Saturday night!  Even though there was about an inch to two inches of snow on the ground I was not going to miss my horse sisters!  We all had a great time with our Dirty Santa gift exchange and Sherry was the perfect Hostess!  Would have been nice had I gotten the right gift in the box for the exchange!  I won't live that down for awhile! ha  I got stuck with the new gag gift the Naked Santa from Cathy!  Gosh now I have to come up with another traveling Santa for next year!  I wonder if Santa can ride a horse? HMM??  My imagination is going wild! ha  By the way check out the YOU TUBE Video of Pico Cathy's horse and Lauren's dog named Cash.  Cash took off with his lead rope one night and led him around the paddock!  I had to miss that ride of course!  Dog Stealing a Horse Video Clip  Give them a good rating!  Over 644 people have viewed the clip already!  What a way to make a stars out of Pico and Cash!

Whew we made it through the last ice storm in 2007 I hope!!  The Lord only gives us what we can handle thankfully. We were about ready to load cows on pots and head south! The PSO Crew came late Saturday afternoon and put in the new highline poles along our road that had fallen into our fence and pasture.  It would have been nice had they picked up the broken pole and removed it from our fence but they didn't so to keep our bred cows in I was out in the tractor dark 30 last night getting it off the fence so we could hang a couple of panels up until we find time to fix the wires.  That was after a day of flushing and transferring embryos!  We ran 90 head of recipients through, that being ours and our friends cows.  We flushed six head and had moderate to poor flushes this time.  We think that the ice storm and stressful conditions played a big part in the low production. It's a crap shoot anyway!  Some people go to casino's and some people like my Dear Abbie  "FLUSH'S COWS"  Cha Ching!  Up goes another cows tail! ha

We made it over to Claremore today to have Dear Abbie's teeth or lack of examined!  Same prognosis as most of them give him!  Quit chewing and you might save some of your teeth!  But we can't make him quit and he probably would give up the love of his life before giving up chewing tobacco! ha  I am not going to press my luck! ha  Check out the new Web Site for Bob and Jeanne Heidlage's Photography Site... Checked on Opie and Jessie the other day and he is growing from all the bottles and TLC he is getting.  He is one spoiled calf!

We had lunch at Goldie's and then delivered my gift that was suppose to be in the box to Sherry.  She was happy to get the bracelet with silver horses on it!  Sure hope I get the next gift wrapped and sent to the right people! ha  I must be getting senile or else I am just plain too busy to check it twice! ha

"Merry Christmas from our House to Your House!"

Our Christmas Present was a New Roof for Santa and his Reindeers to land safely on! Now if the Good Elves could just paint the darn thing we would be in high cotton! ha  All in time.. Maybe 2008 will be the year of PAINTING...the House? Don't hold your breath! ha  I am not going to!  Cows come first at the Thorne Ranch!

December 18-24   Happy Birthday Dalya Rae!   A busy week of the same chores around here!  At least we did have a few pretty days that made it not quite so miserable outside.  I loaded up seven head of show cattle and took them to Brian's on Saturday morning to get their feet trimmed.  Abbie and Tiff put out 24 bales of hay in a cold and blustery day!  I was happy to haul cattle.  While I was gone getting feet trimmed we had customers come from Arkansas stop by. Thanks Buz for stopping, sorry I missed your visit!  It was a miserable day to look at cattle.

We had a great time in Joplin to celebrate our 11th Wedding Anniversary on Sunday evening!  Who are those people that said it would never last?  ha  We probably agree on more than we disagree on most of the time!  Funny thing about love and marriage you have to have a best friend first.  He took me shopping and picked out some new outfits for me!  Now if we ever get away so I can wear them.  My Carhart coat and coverall bibs don't make much of a fashion statement. ha   The cows don't seem to mind though!  It is going to be me and Dear Abbie, three dogs, five horses and 100's of cows for Christmas.  All the kids were mostly here for Thanksgiving so they went to the in-laws this year.  That means next year we get to have the crew.  All the two year old will be three and the babies will be yearlings.  Won't we have a deal of a time with them?  We heard from our Australian friends this morning and they were just going to bed after their Christmas!  Sounds like they are making lots of hay and keeping up with their cattle program.   The pictures to the right are of our seven children close to the same year.  Time does pass when your having fun!  Now our grandkids are getting close to this age!  Are we really that old?  Scared to look in the mirror! ha  The thing about age is you change on the outside the inside still thinks your 16-21! ha  I can see us two in an old folks home.  Me using a show stick as a crutch! ha  I can visualize Abbie in his wheel chair running up behind people and scaring the bee daylights out of them or blowing on the neck of some unsuspecting old lady!  ha  I hope that old lady is still me! ha  Oh the future looks bright! ha

When we are driving around one of my favorite past times is to read signs.  Comes from my ability to read them.  When I was in grade school I had bad eyes and they didn't catch it.  So I struggled with black boards and signs along the road growing up.  Probably the thing that intrigues me the most is the wording!   The other day in Langley we saw a "Tax Office that was a combination Massage Center."  So the theory is you can get your taxes done and then get a massage in the same facility.  Or visa versa get the massage and then get your Taxes done! ha  I would call that a stress reliever and it may be tax deductible on your tax preparation! ha  In Claremore we came across a "Barber shop and a Pecan Distribution and Nut Cracking Facility" all in the same building.  So I figure you can get your hair trimmed and then get your nuts cracked at the same time in that establishment. ha  I told Abbie dear that he really needed a haircut as I have not found time to trim him. ha   He just laughed and said another day thank you!

You all have a great Christmas Eve and Blessed Christmas Day with your family and friends and don't eat too many nuts and candies!   Remember Jesus is the Reason for the Season!  We will be holding down the fort at the Thorne Ranch!  Ho HO HO! Come back soon!

Merry Christmas and

Happy New Year

December 25-31 We hope you all have a great time with family and friends Christmas Eve and Christmas day!  We had a pretty calm holiday and actually enjoyed the peace and quiet.   We didn't do much other than chores.  Dani and Rod came over on Christmas eve to visit!  Dani was excited about Christmas!   We didn't get our cookies made this year as we usually do before Christmas.   Abbie put out some more hay for the cows and I picked up branches and sticks on Christmas day   Barbara and Rick came by with a cow to AI breed.  We all went to the truck stop for supper.   It was the only place open we knew of and we got to ride in their new big truck.  You could get used to all that room.  Today it is cloudy and they are predicting rain to snow possibly.  So our sunshine is over for awhile again!  I have numerous projects to attend to today.  Registrations and entries for more cattle shows.  I really need to get out and take some pictures of the calf crop.  There are certainly some nice babies this fall.   They are all wooly little creatures right now.  Check back soon for more exciting times!  Maybe I will have some new pictures taken by then.  If we don't see you before the New Year have a Happy and Safe New Year Celebration!

December 27-31  Happy Birthday Jeffrey!  We hope you had a great day!   We were A I breeding heifers on Saturday. The day went pretty fast.  Mike Harrison from Missouri came to take a refresher course in A I breeding.  He had that look on his face like where is the picture here most of the time! ha  I didn't freeze burn my fingers today like I did last time I loaded straws.  We fed and put out hay Sunday morning and then packed up and went to Tulsa for supper at Lone Star steak house.  We went searching for a new TV and came home with one that we hope will last as long as the last one we got shortly after we got married some 11 years ago.  Shelf life on any appliance or equipment is short anymore.  Everything is made out of plastic and parts are a thing of the past, you just buy a new one and put the other one in the junk pile!  It would cost more to have someone fix it and the parts would be hard to find that would last anyway.  We have become a disposable world.  The now in thing is we will become a "Green civilization?"  If we think back we were "Green" before it was popular back in the early days!  We didn't waste much back then.  Everything was recyclable and food scraps went to the chickens, dogs and cats.  Today we buy processed chicken food, dog and cat food.  Out pets lived just as long back then too.  They say if you knew how many chemicals our chickens were fed that you wouldn't eat much chicken.   Growth hormones don't thrill me much. ha  We don't give our cattle growth hormones either.  We kind of like the all natural approach to most everything around here.  James Duyore came this morning from the panhandle of Texas to pick up their cattle they purchased.   Mike and Vinnie brought over Turk so we could get a new picture of him for the Winter shows and displays.  So you will have to go see Turk in his Cover Boy Photo Shoot!  ha  Susan and Terry stopped by for a Happy New Year Greeting.  I spent the last day of the year working on the flyer and Abbie watched OSU win their football game and other bowl games.  What a way to bring the New Year in!  Well it's almost midnight Central Standard time!  You all play safe and don't drink and drive!  Happy New Year 2008!
