Welcome to the Adventures of Dear Abbie's Wife

Hello & Welcome to our Diary page.  The purpose of this diary is to record our adventures, folks who stop by, travels and events at the Thorne Ranch.  It was primarily meant for family and friends in the beginning, but we have grown a large number of faithful readers in the past seven years.   Over 90,000 from all over the world have visited us.   We don't intend to offend anyone or to glorify our life here.  It's pretty boring most of the time as you will see!  We are pretty common folks trying to make a living doing what we love, breeding and raising cattle.  Our wish is that someday this Diary will be enjoyed and appreciated by our grandchildren and great grandchildren.  In the mean time we hope you get a few good laughs at our expense.  Learn from the mistakes of others.  You can't live long enough to make them all yourself."   - Joan

July 1-2-3   We made it to Ft Worth about lunch time so we called Doug and Joyce and they met us and the boys.   We made it home about 8:30 and ran in and out of rain showers all the way home!  Today we tried catching up on laundry and tried to mow some before it started raining again.  It sprinkled here and poured about half a mile away!  I could see the rain just north and east of us at the neighbors.   I ended up breaking a belt on the mower so that didn't help me any!  Now we have to find a belt and fix that before I can chop silage again! ha  What a problem to have!  Too much grass!  The Bermuda grass has really taken off now!  We had several visitors today!  Karen came by after lunch.  Terry and James came by and Chris and Ashley stopped by too!  Tonight Rodney came by for a visit!  Looks like more rain in the forecast for tomorrow.  Sure hope we get the roof fixed before winter!

Happy 4th of July!  We think of our troops and friends in service to our Country today.  We wish you a safe second tour in Iraq, Spencer Murdock!  It wasn't that long ago your family was at the Herrington Ranch Lake for water skiing every 4th of July and weekends.  My girls baby sat you and your brothers, Martin and Nick!  Now you are all grown up and making a difference in the world!  We salute you Spencer and pray for your safe return!

We spent an easy day enjoying the sunshine today! Even though it was real muggy and sticky out it was nice to see sunshine!  The boys picked up grass clippings and fed it to the horses.  Jetta thinks they are some kind of nice guys!  She is in the picture above with Clayton and Phillip!  Their daily chores are to take two gallons of oats to them.  Which they have been enjoying that chore! ha   We cleaned up the green truck as we thought we had a gentleman coming to look at it this afternoon. Oh well at least it is cleaned up to sell now!  Enjoy the fire works tonight!  Those poor folks in Coffeeville and Miami are flooded out of their homes and business'  So I am sure they are not celebrating much this 4th of July!  The last report was the Miami Fairgrounds was under 10 foot of water from the Neosho River.  We are high and dry thank heavens!

July 5-6  We had a down pour about 3:00 and water is standing on top of the hills now!  We got done AI breeding the late calvers just in time.  I ran semen into Pryor Vet this morning for the Westfall family.  They AI bred one of their Angus cows.  So that gave me a good excuse to get the oil changed in the little red truck and serviced.  I got back home in time to fix lunch for Abbie and the boys.  We sorted  all the pastures and put out all the bulls today.  The boys got into the mud today and they ended up hosing down before they were allowed into the house!  We made it to the house about 9:00 and still missed getting Mick to his pasture of girl friends.  So he will get moved in the morning.  At least we didn't get any rain today so some of the yard dried up!  It's starting to look like an abandoned pasture!  Grass is a foot high where I didn't get it mowed the other day!  We have already mowed more this year than we did the past two years.  If it ever stops raining we will start up the mowers and put up hay or silage?

Isn't the race for president going to be a deal?  They are jockeying and bumping into each other for position in Iowa already.  Too bad they don't set the presidential hopefuls loose in the corn fields of Iowa on a test.  Test number one: Set them in the middle of a corn field and see who has the common sense to find their way out.  Test two: Fill  all their muck boots with water and see if any of them are smart enough to poor out the water.  Test three:  Wife Swap at political functions so that we can all see them perform in different high pressure marital situations.  Especially Bill Clinton as the prime candidate for Wife Swap!  Since he is considered the wife now and possibly the first lady! :) We hear that we have a couple from Adair that participated in the Wife Swap Show this Spring.   The TV Crews were in town interviewing their kids at the school one day in May for the show, is how we found out about it!  So wait for Adair OK to make it on the map of reality TV! ha  So far we have not been contacted for the program.  Not many ladies would enjoy sorting, driving and scooping up behind cows!

July 7-16  I am home again! After a week long extended trip back home to Nebraska with grandson's Phillip and Clayton as passengers!  I threatened them a couple of times to ride in the back of the little red trailer but that was never followed through. ha  My bark is always worse than my bite!  We left on the 8th of July and returned home on the 15th of July.  We left out of here about noon on Sunday and made it north of St Joseph MO to stop and visit with Jerry and Leona for a break!  Then onto to Lincoln to visit with Gordon, Dorothy and Judy who had pizza ready for us!  We made it to Kearney NE about 10:30 and got a room at the Holiday Inn.
Monday, Kyleigh didn't have to work detasseling corn that day so she joined her cousins at the pool until noon.  We met Shawna for lunch.  We did some shopping in the afternoon and found tennis shoes for the boys and she found some shirts she liked.  We made it to the Dearmont Ranch about 5:00 and went to Leota's to visit and pick up Dalya.  The Shovel Dot Ranch crew were out in they hay field as I went by!  I honked my horn and waved!  They figured out who it was real quick! ha Shareen and Dalton were in the hayfield with Wade and the crew until late!  The picture is of the Skull and Bloody Creek Valley Sign where you would think it meant an Indian battlefield.  The Bloody Valley comes from the color that the algae turns on the Calamus River to red in the summer time.  The Skull probably comes from a cow or bull skull is my guess!

Tuesday, Beck picked me up at noon at Shareen's.   We went to Tierney Land and Cattle south of Broken Bow NE to check out their horses and I will be doing a web site for them.  Beautiful horses and great folks Mike and Kathy!  Gina Lee was one of Brenna's rodeo friends from High School to College Rodeo's and also was one of her brides maids in her wedding.  We made it back to Shareen's in time for supper.  Phillip, Clay, Dalton and Dalya what a wild crew they are! ha  Must be their genetics! ha  We loaded up the boys and headed over to the Herrington Ranch.  Mom and Dad were waiting up for us!  We didn't visit long as we were all exhausted and ready for a soft bed!  Nothing quite as reassuring as going home to your childhood bedroom no matter how old you are!

We made it up and to the BBQ sale in Bassett on Wednesday.  First time I have made it back to the annual event since I quit being the Office manager for that establishment in 1994.  It was nice to be a spectator instead of under the pressure of making sure things go smoothly and accurately! I got lots of hugs and hand shakes from several of my old sale barn friends and co workers.  They all look like they aged some! ha  Of course I haven't aged a day they said! ha  They were all being nice!  Cattle sold high and there were $800-$900 Fall calves sold!  We made it out to the Country Club for a steak supper and more visiting.  Visited with Evelyn, Lorraine, Nick, Larry, Sandy, Beck, Keith and Donna.  Even had a nice visit with Tim Iverson who was our ring bearer in 1969.  All grown up now and he knew the Ankeman's from Miami OK.  They live up north of us where all the flooding went on!  His Mom lives in Carthage MO and his sister lives in Kellyville, OK just south of Tulsa, so it's a small world!  Getting smaller all the time! ha  The boys were elated to finally get to see my nephew Beau.  He rides a horse in the auction ring and they couldn't wait to see him!  He was busy counting cattle in and out so they were about to die with anticipation to see him.  They had talked for days about seeing Beau!  Funny how little boys pick their hero's!  Beau is their hero!  A mighty fine one too!  Beau and Shelly have their own little hero Gage that just turned one!  What a cute little guy!

Thursday we loaded up and headed to Stuart to visit Brenna and Eric at their new home south of Stuart.  They were  both busy with work and Brenna was headed to Madison to a rodeo that afternoon!  We went onto Atkinson and visited with Aunt Donna, Cousin Jeanette and also Aunt Dottie at the rest home.  We had a great visit and made it home for some of Mom's famous fried chicken.   The boys got to ride in the Swather with Dad, ride the Ranger out to the old sod house, we climbed the highest Sand Hlil on the ranch and overlooked the lake and place!

Friday was horse picture day at Bill and Beck's.  Beck fixed up a great lunch for us all!  Bill and Beau brought out all the new horses and we took pictures.  The boys got to ride Wiley and Clay led him around the place.  He really liked the new Blue Heeler puppies too.   He had one cuddled up in his arms all the time!  That boy will have a dog someday!  Late that afternoon I went to Bassett and surprised some friends, John and Melva Fletcher, and Larry and Ardele Fischer.  I tried catching up with Lynn Strelow but she was gone.  So I caught up with the family at the O'Neill Rodeo where Brenna was running the barrels and break away roping!  Clay and Phillip got in the boot race and managed to get their socks good and dirty! ha  But at least they came back with their own boots!  Visited with Brian and Corenne Duba at the rodeo.  It was great to finally see them.  I had not seen Corenne since she was a little girl and now she has two very active little boys and a great business with her husband!  They said that the web site is sure helping their business of Duba Trailer Customizing.   They have sold trailers as far away as California off the web site.

Saturday, the boys and I packed up and headed south to Kearney.  We had lunch with Shawna, Kent and Kyleigh at the Celler!  Shawna went with me west of Kearney and we picked up a trailer load of alfalfa to bring home.  We were exhausted after that chore!  The old gentleman that sold it could not load it for us so we did it ourselves!  We were covered with alfalfa flakes!   Phillip went to the Harry Potter movie and Clayton stayed with Kent.   Shawna and I went shopping at the summer sales at the mall!

Sunday, We got left by 8:00 a.m. and made it to Oklahoma and home by 5:30!  Not a bad trip but we sure were happy to see Thorne Ranch and of course Abbie dear met us at the drive with a big grin!  I actually think he was missing us!

Monday,  It's catch up on laundry, email, web sites, lawn, flowers, groceries, cattle, horses?  How do I get so many things going at once?  It's great to be home!  Can't wait to see all my Okie friends!  Sheila said last night they had truckers from Nebraska bring in some cattle and they all sounded like me!  A Yankee! ha  I have never claimed to be a Yankee but maybe it's not all that bad...  We won the war didn't we? ha  I am not the only Yankee I know that says those southern things like Ya' All and Fixen to do something!  Maybe it's because I was raised in Southern Rock County! ha  Hope you enjoyed my trip  to the North Country come back soon!
July 17-19  We are starting to catch up on a few things around here!  We now have the mowers going on both tractors. We made two trips to Chouteau to get parts and Abbie is mowing the sire lots as I type!  Abbie took the boys and I out to lunch for a couple of days!  I finally got all the place mowed and bush hogged basically!  Wow that grass has grown.  I also got my flower beds back to looking like something besides weeds.  I also did about 10 loads of laundry.  Every time the boys go outside it means a clean outfit!  They got into a mud fight this morning just before we were to leave for town.  So there goes another load of clothes..ha

We made it over to Bob and Karen's for a fish fry the other night and had a great time swimming in their pool!   Bobby caught the grease on fire so we even had fire works for the evening! ha  I just happened to have my camera ready and caught him doing a fire dance on the bridge as the was throwing the hot pan in the creek!  Sure glad he didn't get burned.  I just had to put this picture on because Karen thought it would be eveners for the pictures of her in his rain coat a couple months back!  There you go Karen! ha

We caught the horses yesterday as Justin was suppose to come by to trim hooves but he had a tire go bad so promised to come today.  So far we have not seen him yet but he will probably wait until it cools down some.  The boys rode Jaycee yesterday and had a big time with her.  She is so happy to be messed with she didn't even mind them.  She blew a shoe so I didn't let them ride her much.  I am putting Jazz up for sale as I have to make room for a gelding I will be getting from brother Bill named Wiley Coyote!  A beautiful Buckskin.. something Abbie used to ride.  So it's kind of a surprise for him! ha  He is well broke and only four years old but the grandsons rode him while they were in Nebraska and got along great with him.  I am getting way to old to break horses and so is Abbie.  Jazzy will have to find a good home before she leaves though as she is one of my babies you know! ha

July 20-21-23-24   It rained again on Sunday and Monday so the hay baling has came to a stand still.  We mowed until late on Saturday over north and got a good chunk mowed down.  Sunday afternoon we ran up to Welch to pick up more parts for the rake tractor.  The boys went to spend the afternoon with Dani Leigh swimming.  They had a good time!  We got a much needed relief from kids for a few hours!  It sure does wear you down.  I heard once we have kids when we are young for a reason!  We preg checked 70 head of cows yesterday and so far it looks pretty good for the AI group.  We pulled all the bulls and by the time we got done last night we came in soak and wet from the next rain shower.  Cattle had to be doctored too for sore eye's of pink eye and also sore feet from standing in mud and wet pastures.  Perfect weather for hoof rot!

Clayton and I ran to Pryor this morning to mail letters and pick up groceries.  We have been taking our mail into the post office as we have Mail Box demons tearing up our boxes at night.  So it's not worth it to have your mail scattered upon the country side!  It's a Federal offence but like about every wrong there always seems to be an out for destruction and crooks!   A slap on the hand or another parole!  Today Abbie is breeding donors again for the next flush in seven days.  That will be the last one until next Fall.  Those that don't get bred will be held over until Fall.  The way the summer is going it won't be long before Fall will be here and school will be starting up again!  Hard to believe but time does pass quickly!

Our sympathy goes out to the Nolles family back home.  Irene one of Mom's good friends passed away from Cancer.  We know Irene is smiling down on us from heaven above now.  Free from pain and suffering.   Bert, Patty, Mike and Debra you are all in our thoughts and prayers!

Phillip and Clay's last day at Thorne Ranch

July 25-29  Our haying stopped when the wheel fell off the baler on Wednesday.  Clayton and I made a fast trip to Jorgenson's at Welch for bearings. We found out they gave us the wrong parts so we didn't get our hay put up.  Next morning Phillip and I ran to Welch again to get the right parts this time.  We made it home to find out they messed up again.  We were packed and ready to head to Nashville TN with the boys so our neighbor Jack said he would bale up our remaining hay!  Thank heavens for great neighbors. We made it to Pryor to leave the pups off at the vet clinic at the doggy motel.  Abbie had to get his drivers license renewed so we stopped for that important document that was way past due!  We made it into Nashville about 2:30 in the morning.  Delynn was already there and the boys were excited to see their Mom.  We made it up pretty early and the boys had a swim and then we all went to lunch before they headed East down I-40 towards North Carolina.  Abbie and I spent the day touring Nashville.  We went to the Hermitage the home of President Andrew Jackson.  That was very interesting and enjoyed seeing how they lived back then without air conditioning, screens on windows and cooking over an open fire or hearth.  We think we have it bad now.  Those had to be some tough ladies back then.  Of course the Jackson family owned over 150 slaves at one time so they had manual labor available.  That is probably why we didn't see any black folks touring the place!  We made it to the Grand Ole Opry Friday night show at 8:00.  That was great to finally see the place.  We met some really nice people from TN there too.  Mark and Lisa Cox.  My toes have never quite quit tapping yet!  We saw and heard Porter Wagoner, Little Jimmie Dickens, Bill Anderson, Connie Smith, John Conley, Jack Greene, Charley Pride, David Lee Murphy, the White Family and Jim Ed Brown perform.  We made it over to sight see the Operyland Hotel too!  That was too amazing and we almost got lost!  I couldn't talk Dear Abbie into a $300 a night room but we had a turkey sandwich in the Jack Daniels Bar and Grill and listened to more live music!  We got our exercise walking that sandiwch off back to the parking lot too! ha

July 30-31  Monday was preg check day for the heifers and Brian's cattle.  Allison brought four pairs to set up and breed early in the morning.  I spent most of the day catching up on things around here after having the Flying I Crew in for the night and early breakfast.  I got the weed eater to finally work so I chopped weeds and sprayed round up around bunks and the yard.  Dwight came in at daylight on Tuesday and we flushed five head.   Bob and Karen brought over their angus cow to flush too.  So I fixed up lunch for everyone.  Burgers, German potato salad and baked beans!  I even stirred up a red velvet cake for Abbie dear!  That made some points. ha

Paul and Bonnie Ennis came by to check out the Braunvieh cattle.  They have commercial angus and feel like the Braunvieh can compliment their herd.  I gave them lots to think about and consider in their next breeding.  We may be doing AI for them or selling them a bull.

We had a down pour in the afternoon and just in time for the Coleman family from Tennessee to drop in to check out the show steers.   They picked out two for sure and maybe even another one for the feed out.   They got left to head back East so they could get part way home.  Vinnie called and Linda's Lulu won Grand Percentage heifer and Isabella won Reserve grand at the Ozark Empire show.  Mike called and said that Turk was getting lots of attention.  The banner we had made had an error but I fixed it with white out and a permanent marker.  You have to be a Mother of invention around this establishment ha    I started a web site for Bob and Karen and will have it up and running soon!
