Welcome to the Adventures of

Dear Abbie's Wife

Hello & Welcome to our Diary page.  The purpose of this diary is to record our adventures, folks who stop by, travels and events at the Thorne Ranch.  It was primarily meant for family and friends in the beginning, but we have grown a large number of faithful readers in the past eight years.   Over 90,000 from all over the world have visited us.   We don't intend to offend anyone or to glorify our life here.  It's pretty boring most of the time as you will see!  We are pretty common folks trying to make a living doing what we love, breeding and raising cattle.  Our wish is that someday this Diary will be enjoyed and appreciated by our grandchildren and great grandchildren.  In the mean time we hope you get a few good laughs at our expense. Learn from the mistakes of others.  You can't live long enough to make them all yourself."

  • September 1-2  We actually labored on Labor day at Thorne Ranch.  Imagine that?  We got 150 some bales rolled up at the lease place!  It was a hot, rough and dirty place to be on a holiday.  So we don't want to hear anyone complain about self inflicted sunburn or being stiff and sore from playing, skiing or swimming! ha  You could always have been eating dirt beside Abbie and his new air conditioned tractor and baler!  The air is not working again on the John Deere even though we spent about $2800 on it!  Who said nothing runs like a Deere?  More like a Green and Yellow oven!   I left the field at 6:30 and was happy to come home to the cattle tied in the barn.  I fed them and kicked them all out and then went to fix a top wire on the road fence that had broke.  We have been waiting for some slack time to build a new fence there but the slack time never seems to present itself for some reason?   So as badly as I hated to I cobbled it up with wire to keep the heavies in the calving pasture.  We figured up we have about five miles of new fence to install sometime yet this year. This old year has just flew by hasn't it?  Today we will try and bring home the last of the hay we put up there last year.  The hurricane weather may get to us.  If it does I hope it cools things down for awhile.  It's been terribly hot and miserable here.

TLC Heavy Bred's

  • Congratulations Jaden Jones and Cheyenne Bartram of New Mexico!   Their TLC Steers did really well for them.  Jaden's steer was Grand Champion of Socorro County Fair.  This was the second year in a row that her TLC steer took the honors!  Cheyenne's steer was 2nd in Class behind the Grand Steer at her county show and she made it into the premium sale and stuck $4500 in her pocket as a reward.  It all makes it worth while when you hear success stories like that with your cattle.
  • County Fairs' are gearing up in our area so we will be supporting our local cattle kids in the next few weeks!
  • Congratulations on a successful production sale Larry and Bev Struthoff!  We are looking forward to some Silverado babies!   We sent a bid and evidently had to wrestle for it! ha
  •  September 3-4  Well we are off and running on the political scene now!  I don't know how many of you took in the Sarah Palin speech last night but it left me applauding.  I loved her hockey mom attitude and reference that the only difference between her and a pit bull was lipstick! ha  Wow where has this lady been all our lives?  I'd love to see her and Hillary in a debate.  It's refreshing also to hear her putting it to the left wing media that has all but stuck Obama in the white house.  That scares me even more when our news media thinks they can actually vote for us.  We need to step up to the plate boys and girls and elect a president that will stand up for the American people not a glory seeking want a bee, bent on improving our opinion pole with the world agenda.   I know I am not being politically correct but folks we are this country and whom we place in power needs to be our watch dog.  If that means putting in a Pit bull instead of a Poodle I am all for that!
  • It rained most of yesterday and last night.  It was cloudy and cooler here today and we caught up on a few projects.  We are starting to calve our fall babies and I just left the heavy bred pasture where one of my favorites is working on delivering a new baby.  Abbie is out clipping that calving pasture so we can find the new calves without running over them in the tall grass.
  • September 5-7  We had that favorite cow calve and she gave us twins.  A bull and a heifer out of Turk.  Both have white faces and are so darn cute!  Whoa Girl lost her calf early to some problem so we now have a substitute for now.  She is taking a liking to the little heifer and will produce more than enough milk.  She looks like she should have twins on her.
  • We had company on Friday afternoon.  Andy and Andrea Brogdon from Winston Salem North Carolina.   Andrea works with daughter Delynn at the Heart Hospital.  Great folks and we enjoyed their visit!  Jessie came out after school to spend the weekend.  We grilled up sirloin steaks for the crew and they headed back east to North Carolina after supper.  They were anxious to get home with the Hurricane hitting the state of North Carolina!
  • Saturday Jessie and I worked with the new recruits and gave them all hair cuts, which means we gave them a clean shaved head and bobbed their tails.  We drug them to the dressing chute one at a time but they led back to their spots just fine! ha  We cleaned up and hurried to the Mayes County Fair Livestock Show.  We watched the steer show and the heifers show until late and finally left about 11:30 tired and ready for a late supper at Pizza Hut!!  Cody and TLC Adrianna were 2nd in breed for the Maine Anjou heifers.  Great job Cody you did great and we were extremely proud of you!  Morgan Henry had TLC Riley in the Commercial Heifer Class and was also selected Reserve Champion Commercial Heifer.  Morgan and Cody were still to be in Senior Showmanship but we left not getting to watch.  Met a Diary reader Renita Moore and that was a special treat!  That lady and I hit it off right away and I look forward to getting to know her.  She is looking for a Miniature Donkey and we just happen to have two in the east pasture that need some love and attention named Jade and Jack!
  • Today has been a relaxing day at the Thorne Ranch.  It rained again last night so there are puddles everywhere.  I took Jessie home this morning and picked up groceries.

  • September 8-9  Monday was catch up day!  I bush hogged the north pasture until Abbie got the feeding done in the morning and then he took the wheel and I tied up the show cattle and worked hair until the afternoon.  I cleaned up and made it to the Mayes County Premium sale to support the kids that have worked hard with their cattle.   I didn't stay for the auction and got home to work the rest of the night on the Burrows web site.  Adding new horses for sale and cleaning it up and giving it a new look.  It is called redecorating. ha  Hung new curtains and swept the floors! ha  Abbie clipped pastures until 2:00 in the a.m.   We are almost getting them all done!  Still not back in the hayfield due to cloudy and damp days!
  • I went to Chouteau today to get parts at Walshes for the mower.  I didn't get back home until 12:30 so I picked up Braum's for lunch!  We gathered the Spring calves and sorted off the calves to wean.  We also sprayed for flies.  They sure are hungry and if we get a frost soon it wouldn't hurt my feelings to get rid of those pesty varmits!  Renita came out and she met miniature donkey's Jack and Jade.  She loved them and they will find a good home at her house very soon!  We finally got to the house about 8:30 dark already!  We will have a bunch of crying babies and cows tonight!  At least it is cool and they shouldn't have heat strokes!
  • September 10-12  The rain and hurricane wind is headed this way according to the weather forecasters!  We got rain today all day from the north and tomorrow it will come from the south and IKE!   Y-IKES it is looking bad for lots of folks down south of us!  I sure hope they get on higher ground quick.  We had three new calves today.  Jillian an old Dragon daughter gave us a pretty little Turk heifer calf.  Black and polled.  Another ET calf was born out of Evie and Turk and the old Angus cow we got from Benson had a pretty little Hardy heifer calf.  So the calving pasture is starting to come alive with babies.
  • I cooked up some chili today to go with the cool and wet rainy weather!  I picked up Dani Leigh today from school.  We baked cookies and had a good time as usual.  A gentleman stopped by and was interested in an Angus bull today.  He will bring the wife back this weekend to look see!  Feed came again today!  Dani and I spoiled the delivery man and gave him hot out of the oven Cowboy Cookies!  He thought that was a real treat! ha   Bet he doesn't get that kind of treatment every place he delivers feed!  ha Cowboy Cookies are Oatmeal, Coconut, Nuts and Chocolate Chips with all that other sweet stuff rolled in! ha   It's a friend from home's recipe that is simply the best!
  • The new web site is up and running for Meitler Cattle out of Lucas Kansas!  Check them out and drop them a line of good luck!
  • I am sure you all heard about Obama's comment about "Lip Stick on a Pig"  Comparing apples to apples.   If we were to saddle up Mr. Obama on his Democratic Donkey he really would look like  a "Saddle on a SOW"  Will people not get a clue yet that this guy is not for REAL!  His speeches are written for him.  Do you actually think he has that much experience and intelligence?  I know, keep it down girl! ha
  • NEO Judging team will be here this weekend to practice judging cattle and the Roger's County Fair is going on too!  Also friend Carol's Production sale is Saturday.  So it looks like we will be busy this weekend.
  • You all have a safe weekend and hang on folks! Pray for our friends in Texas and Louisiana.
  • September 13-14  Spent most of the day at the Roger's County Fair.  All the kids did really well and of course we were extremely proud of them.  See all the smiling faces at the News Page for Roger's County Fair   Abbie stayed home and babysat a couple of new calves in the pouring down rain.

The NEO Judging team from Miami came out for a session in the afternoon.  Abbie showed them the show cattle and they made some classes out of that group!  It was raining too hard to use much of the other pens not unless you had a wet suit!  Thanks for stopping by to judge our cattle in the rain!

  •   I stopped off at Carol's to see how their Angus sale went and was glad to hear that they had a great crowd of folks!
  • We got around 5-6 inches of rain from the IKE hurricane and the wind blew pretty hard last night! Today the sun is finally shining bright!  We have customers coming this afternoon to look at the steers who finally quit crying for their mothers.  We had more babies to look at this morning!  I was afraid they were going to be born with gills instead of lungs the way this rainy weather has been! ha   We heard from our Texas friends and they all survived but will be trying to find fuel for their generators.  Sounds like they need to stockpile some tankers somewhere so folks can get fuel.   They are lucky to even have generators it sounds like!   We aren't very prepared anymore for devastation anymore!  I'd imagine most families don't keep a pantry full of canned foods anymore like we used to!  Everything is fresh or frozen these days!  Maybe we should go back to some old traditions and learn how to can food again?
  • See the picture we received of CM Coffee on a Bareback Bronc Thanks Bill for sending the pictures.

  •  September 15  The sunshine is blinding today!  We have been like a pack of moles around here with life jackets on! ha  Little breeze to help dry up the ponds too! We ended up with two groups yesterday looking for steers.  Katie O'Neill picked out the Char cross steer named Lawrence "Larry" for short.  So now we have to get him started on halter.  Neighbors Mike and Connie came by to look at steers too.
  • Three trucks came in this morning with rock for Abbie's pen cleaning project he started yesterday.  We should be putting down cement as much rock as we plant around here!
  •    He added rock around the wash rack area and it won't be such a muddy mess now!
  • Our Texas friends made it through the hurricane but they all sounded very depressed.  We hope you all will keep them in your prayers for a speedy recovery back to normal way of life!  Patrick Paul family had double tragedies when they had the water line break in their home while they were on vacation here in August.  It ruined their floors and walls on their home so they were already living in a small trailer waiting for contractors to fix it.  Patrick works for Volvo and by the time the dealership let them off it was too late to pack their stuff and leave so they stuck it out in that little travel trailer. He also said that the roads were so packed by then that you would never get out in time anyway.  We got a hold of the Ivey crew and they were doing okay but were looking for fuel for their generators.  Mark actually made it to the ranch to check things over but he had to cut 20 some trees and move down power lines out of the way to get there.  Roger said it looks like a war zone!  We hope and pray they will all get back to normal or somewhat normal real soon!
  • September 16-17-18  Happy Birthday Grace Abigail Thorne!  1 Year old the 17th of September!
  • Seth Vance and Ethan Moore came out on Monday and we got a good share of the cattle washed and blown out.  At least we got the mud off from them.  Great to have some knowledgeable help sure wish they could help everyday.  Thanks guys!
  •  Abbie and I fed as early as we dared and cleaned up and went to the Roger's County Premium Sale in Claremore.  We were proud and happy for all the kids that made that extra premium money to help pay for expenses!  Jacob Daley made the premium sale with TLC Harry and was awarded $1700...  Congratulations Daley family!  Yes we have another steer for you....Donna! ha  Brock made $1700 on his Grand Champion Steer too!  He was happy!

Jacob and Harry

  •  I went in on Wednesday for bone density test and to have my cholesterol checked.  My thoughts were racing when I went in and had no idea what they did to check your bone density until I finally asked a nurse daughter! ha  I had visions of clamps around my arms and legs! ha  As it was they put you on a table and X-ray your body! Painless!  It sounds like I am just a little high on my Cholesterol (not surprising) so will have to take medication.  I am not much of a pill pusher!  In fact I even hate to take aspirin for pain. ha  Oh well guess it goes with old age! ha  I have always laughed at these folks with their pill boxes for each day of the week.  I may not be far behind! ha
  • I washed and blew out eight head yesterday.  They sure look nice after you get them clean and dry!  We drug the new recruits around behind the tractor this morning and they all behaved except one.  Abbie is headed over to mow and I will drag more to the wash rack today.  It looks to be 16 head we will take to Tulsa.  Sure hope all the help shows up to help at the Fair.  I am ready for recruits!
  • September 19-22   Saturday was busy as usual around here.  Katie O'Neill came to pick up Lawrence the Charolais steer.  Whom was coming along very nicely in his halter training!  It didn't take long and Katie and Lawrence were bonding well!  She walked him to the trailer and he loaded with a little push from behind.  Thank you so much for giving him a great new home!  We look forward to watching you both show in numerous shows this Fall and next Spring.
  • Congratulations Brittney Free on your 1st Place in Maine Anjou Class with TLCC Ali's Britt!  Send Pictures!

  • We loaded up the trailer full of Show cattle to take to Brian and Erica to get feet trimmed and haircuts on Friday night.  We made it back on Saturday to pick them up and bring back another load to drop off, but before that......
  •   I got my prescribed "Extreme Exercise" chasing old Teresa... I had already washed and blown out numerous bodies and was pretty weak already!  Abbie was in the hayfield over at the lease place and I decided to check the heavies before we took the last load to Brian's when he got back!  Well to make a long story short I got my blood pressure up and my heart rate up too.  She wasn't getting anything done and had been running around with her tail up for quite some time.  This cow is older than dirt and she was AI bred to Magnum so we have been excited about this delivery for quite sometime.  First she gave me a run in the trees, over logs, stick and cow pies!   I finally got her out of the trees and then she went for the water puddle.. which by the way was almost over my boots and I struggled to keep from falling face first several times.  I finally enticed her out with a feed bucket after I went back for the mule!  That didn't last long and she went for the trees again!  All this time I was on foot with my only weapon a long stick I found in the trees!  She made it back to the trees and I convinced her to by pass the water puddle the next time and had her in the corral.  You would think that was it right?  NOT.... Abbie dear darling husband of mine dumped a big pile of rock in front of the gate.  So I could not shut the gate without scooping a ton of rock away.  She went in and I thought (dumb me) that she would stay at the end and not come out while I went for the other gate to go down the alley.  I had the gate open and looked back to see that crazy old Fullblood cow with her tail in the air and headed north back to the trees.  At that point I was thinking I need a gun to put myself out of misery! Bet you thought I meant for the cow huh? ha  So back to the trees I walked and this time I opened another gate into the other side of the corral.   I was walking her back to the barn when my KNIGHT in Shining Armor drove in!  I shut the gate behind her and said!  She is all yours now!  Not really, I helped deliver a pretty little Magnum heifer we will call Maggie.  All the pain and agony forgotten when we saw that pretty little white face!  We probably wouldn't have had to help her but we are prepared to be safe than sorry.  She did have a foot back that when it was presented the delivery went smoothly!  Oh motherhood so glad that I am a Grandmother and have that all behind me! ha
  • Jessie came out to help on Sunday and we made it back to Brian's to pick up the last load of trimmed cattle.  They looked so nice and manicured!  Wish I could get a trip to the beauty parlor, get my nails and hair done? ha  (Wishful thinking) Jack Thompson came down from Miami to check out the calf crop!  He was impressed with the Turk calves and said he was going to have to get some of his semen for some cows!  He had lunch with us!  Jessie and I whipped up some Spaghetti for lunch!   We washed and worked with all the cattle and had a grand time as usual!  Abbie was in the hayfield mowing so we hurried and fed all under the barn and the outside pens just as he drove in about 6:45.   So Jessie and I went to Pryor and had supper at Goldie's and I took her back home.   Thank you Jessie for your expert help.  You are a one in a million!  The cattle love you and you love them back!
  •  We took the trailer in to Cowboy Rigs to get the lights fixed before lunch and had lunch in Pryor.  Clint came out and preg checked  50 some head.  We got the health papers for Tulsa too.  Clint gave me a ride to pick up the truck and trailer about 5:30.  I made it home in time to help move cattle to new pastures.  Bred in one and open in another.  It was dark 30 when I finally made it to the house.  We now have all the Tulsa cattle tied together and the other cattle we have been just breaking separated.  I worked hair on all the cattle.  I washed and blew out Lulu today and happy to report she is pregnant.   We will haul her over for Rashele to show one last time.  I had just gotten to the house when Dear Abbie called and said, "Will you come out and help me?"  N60 had an ET calf in her that was way overdue!   So rather than take a chance we drove her in easily and plucked a pretty heifer calf from the Apple tree! ha   All in a days work!  It's like getting a precious gift everyday around here! ha  Our greatest reward is inspecting the new babies and their momma's just before dark.
  • September 23-28  Wow that was a blur.  Tulsa State Fair began full steam Wednesday afternoon!  We took a trailer load of equipment to set up for the cattle and booth.  We made it home about midnight.  The cattle were patiently waiting for us to feed and take them to their night pasture motel.  Cody and Jessie met us there and we sure appreciated the great help in setting up.  Thursday was haul cattle in day!  I had some problems with my eye so had to check in at the eye Doctor in the morning.  I kept seeing cob webs in my right eye.  A problem with my retina breakdown in the membrane.  Not going blind yet but was told to keep it down to a dull roar.  So have been trying to take it a little slower.  The Paul family from south of Hurricane Houston area got here late on Wednesday.  Glad they could make the trip!  They have been great help!  That little heifer we got in last Friday to halter break for Sydney won her Class and was also selected Reserve Grand Champion Beefbuilder.  She went from weaned heifer to Show Heifer in a week! ha   The 2nd day I worked with her she was letting me move her feet with a show stick.  They don't break out that well that quick usually! ha   She didn't lead real well but she was very gentle and not a mean bone in her body! ha  Well to break it down we had a fabulous show that started sharp at 6:00 on Saturday evening (yesterday)  I am home watching a  Cowgirls' Momma!  Who is calving!   Abbie and his crew are headed to Tulsa to feed, wash and prepare for the Maintainer show this afternoon at 3:00.  I will catch up with them as soon as I know everything will be delivered in good shape!  The Good Lord has truly blessed us with great friends, great kids, and wonderful cattle.   We had 18 head tied in our stall area!  One complete side of an alley was TLC Cattle!  To make a long story short as I need to go check the cow!   TLC had the Grand Percentage Heifer with Lulu with Rashele showing!  Reserve Grand Champion Heifer that Sydney Paul now owns named TLC Friday Nite Star.   Grand Champion Percentage Bull with TLC Turk, Grand Champion Purebred/ Fullblood TLC Anna's Light shown by Brock and Grand Champion Fullblood Bull TLC Bud's Cowboy shown by Rox.   We were extremely proud of the kids and the cattle!  The best of both worlds!  Jessie got her feet wet and went out and stuck cattle with the best of them!  Great job Jessie you did so great your first show!!  We were so proud of you and so was your family! Watch for pictures at the News Page..  Brother Bill and Beck made it on Friday to deliver a horse named Bugs to friend Carol, and we sure were happy they came to cheer us on at the show!  The only problem?  It was way too short a stay!  Thank you for your help too!
  • On a sad note we had notification this morning that our good friend Luis Castillo of south Texas was killed in a terrible accident.  He was a great friend and we will miss him in this world! Our sincere sympathy goes out to his wife, Dulce Castillo and his family.  So it goes we are here only a short time so make the best of every second, minute, hour and day!  Tell your loved one's you care!

"If life gives you grapes, make sweet wine, if it gives you prunes don't take a laxative! "  -Joan

Come back soon!  I am going to go check that cow while I still have one good eye to see those beautiful babies!

  • September 28  - News Flash we had the Grand Champion Maine Anjou Heifer named TLCC Ali's Andrea at the Tulsa State Fair this afternoon.  TLC Turk was Reserve Grand Champion Maintainer Bull...  We had Grand Champion Cow Calf Pair and TLC Turk's Linse was Reserve Division Maintainer Calf Champion.. She was shown by Jessie!  Great job Jessie, Brock, Kyle, Cody, Rashele, Blake and Reighly!  Thank you for your expert help for the Maine show!   Thank you to our fitting friends Erica, Rox, Allison, Mark, Bryce, Adriann, Brian, Cody, Tommy, Kyle, and John Williams Family.  With great friends like you all we were able to pull off another smashing big win at Tulsa State Fair.
  • September 29-30  We made it home with the cattle about 9:30.  It took two trips for Abbie Dear to get them all!  I had the little red trailer stuffed full of tack and supplies!  This morning it was real hard to realize that we didn't have to pack up and go to Tulsa for the day!  So we are enjoying being home for a change!  I washed clothes and unpacked most of the day.  Abbie fed after he finally found the feed pans in the trailer.   He baled up the more hay today too!  The cattle got a much needed rest in the north pasture today under the shade trees!  They enjoyed the space to run and act like bovine today! ha
  • Thank you so much friends!  We sincerely appreciate all your expert help.  We pulled off a smashing performance again this year!  18 head was sure enough a challenge for about anyone...  to say WOW.  How did we do that?    A total of  6 - Supreme Grand Champions.  It took lots of people working together and not complaining about too much work!  Again Thank You!  See just a few of the pictures at the News Page!    Watch for professional shots from Heidlage Photography very soon!

TLC won a Herdsman Banner.  Thank You Tulsa State Fair!
