The Thorne Ranch Cow
Herd
It's all about the cow side
of the family at this ranch! We breed for females that will continue
their legacy in their progeny. We have kept cow families that
have proven themselves. We have several in herd that we can show
you three to four generations. We still have great and grand Dams
still producing in the herd. My Dad always said produce females
that are feminine and bulls that are masculine and you will consistently
produce fertile cattle. That can go onto reproduce consistent
performance genetics.
We don't breed for steers.
Our philosophy is that we will get a few good steers to sell, but if
you breed only for steers you will soon loose your maternal and bull power
quickly! We want to retain as much cow and bull power as we can produce!
Maternal, fertile and moderate framed cows and masculine fertile Bulls are
our ultimate goal!
Our
cow herd consists of 300 plus top females. A Spring calving herd and
Fall calving herd. We register the progeny
in the Maine Anjou Association, Angus Association, Simmental Association and
the Braunvieh Association. The cow herd is divided up in three groups,
Donors, AI Cows and Recipients. The recipient cows are also producers
of high quality calves when cleaned up with our various herd sires. We
have added more Maine genetics over the years as they cross well with our
other breeds plus they are a breed in demand!
We have a rough estimate of 100 Maine & Maintainer Cows
and 100 Fullblood/Purebred Braunvieh cows and 100 Angus, Simmental and Angus Cross cows.
We retain all our own replacements and offer a few for sale each year.
